The Space: A 10,000 square-foot office in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Status: Completed!

It was an incredible honor to be asked to design the Brooklyn office of Eligible API, a healthcare company located in an amazing space in Greenpoint. Completed in just under a year, the renovation process got a great head-start thanks to a building with beautiful bones—360-degree windows and 20-foot ceilings!—and a very trusting client. The only direction I received was the best kind: “Do whatever you think will look great.” Mission accepted.

Highlights of this space:

-The views and the wide open space. Working in a space that requires no demolition—which was the case at Eligible—is a wonderful thing. My biggest challenge was filling the generous expanse without losing the stunning views all around (including some of the water). In the end, we managed to retain a sense of airiness despite the addition of three conference rooms, three private offices, and three more informal meeting rooms.

-Its elegant atmosphere. You don’t always think of a start-up office as a luxe interior with sleek, chic accents, but with its marble-adorned reception area, Scandinavian furnishings, and  multitude of custom touches, this office is definitely an exception to a commonly accepted rule. My favorite details: the stadium and window seating; the white oak walls in the conference room; the Andrew Neyer light fixtures in the board room; and the gorgeous Muuto sofa that greets guests upon entering.

-Its bunk beds! The Eligible office houses three nap nooks, where any of its 20 staff members can catch a little mid-afternoon shut-eye—or even just do a little work in a comfy place away from their desks.

I’ll never forget the happy reactions the finished space elicited from employees, especially CEO Katelyn Gleason. Glamorous, intelligent, driven, and down to earth, her spirit and vision is evident in its design— and seeing how satisfied she was with the results of our hard work was the best compliment I could hope to receive.
